Gender differences in competition across cultures

Abstract

We examine whether women and men of the same ability differ in their decisions to seek competition in a unique task and how gender differences vary across countries. We created an online task based on an incentivized Reading the Mind in the Eyes Test (RMET) in which we can first measure participants’ performance as well as their estimation of their performance and belief over their placement among participants. After, they choose whether they would like to play a second phase of the RMET under the same incentive piece-rate scheme or a competitive one in which they would be paired with another participant with the same performance level.
