Disseminating market information via mobile phones to cashew producers

Abstract

In collaboration with the National Cashew Association of Guinea-Bissau (ANCA), the Ministry of Economy and Finance and the Ministry of Agriculture, and with the support of two generous PEP and PEDL grants, we are designing a cluster randomized controlled trial with 2400 Bissau-Guinean families spread across 250 villages, to be implemented along the 2020 cashew campaign. The objective of this project is to analyze how communicating information on prices and market dynamics through Market Information Systems can increase the prices obtained by cashew farmers. Increased transparency and richer information should increase producers’ negotiating capacity and facilitate them to better choose when to sell their crops.
