The role of sexual orientation on occupation selection: partners, prejudice, and motherhood

Abstract: We study differences in occupational task content by sexual orientation. Using data from the American Community Survey, we show that women in homosexual couples hold occupations with a stronger abstract and manual component and a lower routine component. The routine component is traditionally associated with occupations allowing career interruptions with lower skill depreciation. Neither individual nor partner characteristics drive these differences. Furthermore, our findings remain robust after accounting for differences in labor force participation and controlling for prejudice at the occupation level. Similar to previous research on motherhood gaps, our analysis reveals that differences start to emerge around the onset of motherhood and endure thereafter.
